Dress Requirements for Students

Update: 1 January 2007: The policy has been updated to include the exclusion of denim from school dress requirements. School dress requirements are tangible evidence of the standards expected of students. Developed by the School Council in consultation with students, parents/carers and staff, a school’s dress requirements play an important role in promoting a positive image of the school and creating a sense of identity among students.

Duty of Care for Students

Duty of care is a legal concept that has its origins in common law. This policy explains what ‘duty of care’ means, how teaching staff may discharge their duty of care to students, and circumstances in which non-teaching staff, external providers and volunteers may owe students a duty of care. 11.11.09 version 1.1 published with addition of procedural information regarding Working With Children Checks policy.

Excursions: Off School Site Activities

The Department encourages schools to conduct well planned off school site activities that are integrated with learning programs. Activities conducted outside the relatively protective environment of the school site involve greater risk. Exemption from Particular Classes

Section 72 of the School Education Act 1999 provides for a parent, on the grounds of conscientious objection, to seek an exemption for a child from attending classes where a particular part of a course of study is taught, taking into account the culture, values and beliefs of parents and students.

Family Court Orders in Schools

A principal will allow each parent access to a student and his or her information, unless there is a court order to the contrary. The principal, in allowing such access, will have due regard to the student’s safety and welfare, educational needs, and the proper management of the school. This policy replaces the Family Law Issues in Schools policy.
