Update: 12 December 2006: The policy has been converted to the policy template format. No alterations to the text have been made. June 06 update; The policy has been updated to reflect necessary changes to determine where WorkSafe Improvement Notices have been issued in DET worksites. The policy is based on the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1984. It outlines the procedures and responsibilities for identifying and reporting hazards, working safely and managing risks, induction, incident and accident investigation, safety and health representatives and committees, and issue resolution related to occupational safety and health in Department workplaces. 11.11.09 version 1.1 published with addition of procedural information regarding Working With Children Checks policy.

Officers are required to gain the appropriate approval to travel using the prescribed Travel Application form, travel economy class using the best fare of the day through the Department’s contracted travel service provider, book travel on-line where possible, and provide a Travel Reporting Declaration to satisfy the Department’s reporting obligations.

An official opening is a significant event for a school and provides an opportunity to showcase the school or extension to the local community and promote the ethos of the school. The Official Opening of School Buildings policy provides an outline of the procedures for schools, District and Central Offices and the Western Australian and Commonwealth Governments for the opening of new schools, school buildings and upgraded facilities.

Update: 1 June 2007: An amendment has been made to the abseiling section 2.4.1.3, that prohibits forms of descent in which the abseiler's brake hand does not constantly control the rate of descent. The policy contains 18 sections of specific procedural information and guidelines for a broad range of land based and aquatic activities undertaken on or off school sites. These procedures and guidelines are provided to assist teachers in meeting their duty of care responsibilities to students. It has been amended to include the Aquatic Rescue Qualification in the water-based sections of the policy.
