2006 Review of the Nutritional Value of Food Sold in School Canteens: Final Report

In May 2006, all public, independent and Catholic schools were sent a survey from the Department of Education and Training requesting information about canteen operations and the types and quantities of food and drinks sold. Extensive consultation occurred with health and nutrition experts, education and curriculum experts, canteen managers and staff, members of the food industry, and parents. This report is comprised of the findings of the Expert Reference Group and the school canteen survey. For further information please contact Strategic Policy and Planning on 9264 4998.

Alcohol on School Premises

The availability and consumption of alcohol on school premises needs to be carefully managed. Schools have a duty to ensure that the supervision of children is appropriate at all times and that the reputation of the school is not damaged by inappropriate behaviour at social occasions.

Animals in Schools

Animals can enrich learning experiences for students, but it is a requirement that they be used responsibly and ethically adhering to Animal Welfare Act (2002). Schools using animals for teaching and learning activities must obtain prior approval from the Schools Animal Ethics Committee and records of use must be maintained.

Attendance

The School Education Act 1999 requires compulsory aged students, as defined in the Act, to attend school or participate in an educational program of a school. Principals are responsible for recording and monitoring the attendance of all students and for implementing appropriate strategies to restore attendance if necessary. Child Protection

All staff have a vital role to play in creating a safe and protective school environment through the identification and support of children affected by abuse. This policy assists staff to respond appropriately where there is a concern for a child’s wellbeing or a disclosure of abuse. The best interests of the child will be met through an understanding of the processes and requirements for reporting child abuse to agencies who share this responsibility. 11.11.09 version 2.3 published with addition of section 6.18 regarding Working With Children Checks policy.

Community Kindergartens

The management of community kindergartens is shared between members of the parent community, via the Parent Management Committee, and officers of the Department of Education and Training. Teachers in community kindergartens work closely with the Parent Management Committee. Community Service Program

The Department of Education and Training (DET) recognises the value and educational benefits of programs that enable students to connect with and contribute to the community. In 2007 the Community Service Program was implemented in all public schools. The Community Service Program gives students opportunities to contribute to their school and/or wider community as part of their school program. As part of this program, students contribute a minimum of 20 hours service to the community, typically during Years 10 and 11. Community Use of School Facilities and Resources

It is Government policy that school facilities and resources are made available for use by the community. Applications for use of school facilities and resources must be approved by the principal and formalised through a written agreement signed by the school principal and a representative of the user group. 11.11.09 version 1.2 published with addition of procedural information regarding Working With Children Checks policy.

Corruption, Prevention and Detection

The Corruption Prevention and Detection policy replaces the Fraud Prevention and Detection policy and has undergone 18 months or revision and consultation. The policy now refers to corruption, which encompasses fraud and better reflects the Premier's Circular 2005/02 Corruption Prevention.
